- Phipps Field was established around 1925 by the Phipps family, originally from New York. While polo thrived in Long Island and Aiken, South Carolina, many were drawn to Virginia for its vibrant fox hunting culture and the idyllic Piedmont lifestyle. With no proper polo field in the area, the family chose this land for its fertile soil and access to a reliable water source—essential for maintaining grass polo fields. Using only a team of mules, they leveled the land and even redirected the flow of Goose Creek to accommodate the field. Today, if you look closely, you can still see the original rock wall they built over 100 years ago to channel the creek around the field.
- 100 Years of Polo Excellence - We are proud to honor a century of polo tradition at Phipps Field. This historic venue has welcomed local players and world-renowned professionals alike. Previous owners include legendary figures such as Paul Mellon, Senator John Warner, Jack Kent Cooke (former owner of the Washington Redskins), and most recently, the Brennan Family of Llangollen Farm in Upperville, VA.
- World-Class Playing Surface - The field is planted with resilient Bermuda grass, known for its rapid growth and self-healing properties—perfect for the demands of polo. Thanks to the sandy, fertile soil and its proximity to Goose Creek, the field offers excellent drainage and ideal conditions for irrigation, ensuring a consistent and safe playing surface.
- Smart Irrigation for Optimal Playability - Our state-of-the-art, custom-built irrigation system is fully remote-operated, complete with live feed cameras and a mobile app for real-time monitoring. Advanced sensors automatically shut down the system to prevent overwatering. Two high-efficiency irrigation reels allow the entire field to be watered in just one four-hour session, giving us a six-day window of optimal playing conditions each week.
- Tranquility Beside the Creek - Goose Creek remains one of the most beautiful natural features of the property. We’ve created several sitting areas along the water’s edge, inviting players and guests to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings between matches.
- Your Time, Your Game - We know how valuable your time is. That’s why we build our polo schedule around your availability—and the weather, not ours. That’s our promise to you, and to the sport. Because at Destination Polo, we’re only happy when you are.
