- Phipps field was built circa 1925 by the Phipps family who originally hailed from New York. Polo was popular in both the area around Long Island, New York and Aiken, SC, but many people were attracted to Virginia for fox hunting and the lifestyle that the Piedmont had to offer. Lacking a suitable polo field the family acquired the land for its rich fertile soil and location to a water source necessary for irrigating a field. Using only a team of mules they not only leveled the field as we know it today but also changed the flow of Goose Creek to accommodate the dimensions of the field. If you look closely at the creek you can still see the rock wall in places they built over 100 years ago to channel the creek around the polo field!
- Today the field boasts 99 years of polo history and tradition by many local players as well as notable famous polo players from around the world. Previous owners of the field are Paul Mellon, Senator John Warner, Jack Kent Cooke - former Redskins owner, and most recently the Brennan Family - owners of historic Llangollen Farm in Upperville, VA.
- The hybrid Bermuda grass field is capable of intense growth and self healing after polo games using a basic maintenance plan that gives it both the ideal playing surface as well as the resilience that a polo field needs to have. The fertile sandy soil makes for ideal growing and drainage conditions for the Bermuda and the location next to the creek makes it ideal for irrigating to ensure the continuous growth of the grass.
- The state of the art custom built irrigation system is capable of being remotely operated and monitored by a live feed camera as well as a cell phone app that monitors and has built in sensors to shut it down and prevent a mishap which could potentially render the playing surface too wet for play. In addition the irrigation system uses 2 irrigation reels thus lowering the watering time needed to one 8 hour period allowing a 6 day window in which to play.
- Goose Creek is one of the most beautiful features running through the middle of the property. We encourage you to visit one of the many sitting areas we have created next to it and take a few minutes to enjoy the peace and tranquility it has to offer.
- We know your time is valuable so we want to maximize every opportunity for you to be able to play when you want. We build the polo schedule around your time (and the weather) not ours. That’s our level of commitment both to our clients and to polo. We're happy if you're happy.
